Brief Hints How to Use the Helios ColorSync XTension
-----------------------------------------------------
* You should have received the file "ColorSync 2 XT Manual.pdf" which
is an Adobe Acrobat document containing the manual for the Helios
ColorSync 2 XTension. Please read it before using the ColorSync 2
XTension.
* As long as your copy of Helios ColorSync 2 XTension is not fully
licensed but used in demo mode it displays a dialogue each time you
start QuarkXPress and includes a demo message in print-outs.
* You need a a properly licensed copy of PowerPC-native QuarkXPress for
Macintosh version 3.31 or newer; older versions or 68K versions of
QuarkXPress will not do. A Power Macintosh with millions of colors is
recommended.
* Helios and its Japanese distribution partner Hulinks Inc. offer a fully
localized Japanese version of Helios ColorSync 2 XTension. The Korean
Helios distributor Qnix Co. offers a Korean XTension manual.
* Please set QuarkXPress' preferences to "Colour TIFFs" 32 bit and
"Grey TIFFs" 256 levels in the "Edit", "Preferences", "Application..."
dialogue.
* If you work in a networked environment it is best to copy the
"ICC-Profiles" folder to a server so that all Macintosh have access to
it. You may store the profiles in a subfolder or in a separate volume.
Keep the folder structure and the names!
* Set the Macintosh monitor profile(s) by means of Macintosh "ColorSync
System Profile" control panel.
* You need standard ICC profiles for your scanners, monitors, printers,
or presses. It is best to generate your own profiles e.g. by means of a
Gretag or similar measurement device and profile generation software
from Linotype-Hell, Agfa or other companies. The XTension comes with many
high quality profiles which were generated with Linotype-Hell ScanOpen and
PrintOpen. The included profile for the Apple Color LaserWriter is
probably much better than the one you are used to.
* The XTension works on a per document base and stores settings with
the documents not with the application.
* The XTension adds "ColorSync 2..." and "Lab Colors..." entries to the
Quark XPress "Utilities" menu.
* Create or open your QuarkXPress document and then call "ColorSync
2..." to switch color matching on. Specify the location of the
ICC-Profiles folder or volume and choose your printer profile. Specify
the proof printer profile only if you want to do a proof - the XTension
will then transform to the color space of the final printer before
matching to the proof printer.
* You can define and add your own CIE Lab colors in "Lab Colors..." as
soon as you switched color matching on and specified a printer profile.
Don't forget to press the "Add" button before you confirm ok! CIE Lab
colors can be spot or separation/process colors with default being spot
color.
* The Helios ColorSync 2 XTension does not spearate QuarkXPress'
pre-defined black color from RGB to CMYK, but treats it as pure black.
Please note that also the other pre-defined colors of QuarkXPress -
i.e. Cyan, Yellow, Magenta, Red, Blue, Green - are defined in RGB and
therefore produce less than optimum results. For best results define
them as your own CMYK or CIE Lab based colors.
* If your Macintosh is not switching back to your working folder after
you selected a scanner profile, please open the Macintosh control panel
"General Settings" and select the option "folder which contains the
application".
* Try to get real white paper for proof printing. The typical office
paper and even special paper for color copiers is specially treated
and too blueish.
* You might want to check Helios EtherShare OPI 2.0 which offers
server-based color management as part of the OPI spool system for any
print client. It provides a complete ICC-compliant color management
workflow.
Enhancements in version 2.0
---------------------------
* Support of TIFF images in CIE Lab and LabLH
The XTension allows to place, view, proof, and print uncompressed CIE Lab
and LabLH TIFF images which are otherwise not supported by QuarkXPress 3
itself.
* Support for pre-tagged ICC profiles
For pre-tagged images user don't have to specify the source profiles in
the ColorSync dialogue any longer; the tagged profiles will always be used.
* Additional new ICC profiles for many standard environments incl.
newspaper press
* CIE Lab, RGB, and CMYK sample files for easy testing and checking
* Smooth co-operation with Helios EtherShare OPI 2.
Profiles set for printer and optional proof printer with the XTension
will overwrite the default setting in EtherShare OPI 2.0. This holds
also true when a XTension user specifies special individual printer
profiles for certain images. This gives more flexibility and allows
e.g. to treat black differently for certain images. QuarkXPress users
also get color matching with EtherShare OPI spool queues which are not
activated for it by default.
Profiles tagged to images by means of the tagging tools of EtherShare
OPI 2.0 incl. tagging by reference are recognized by the XTension.
* Improved documentation
* Automatic installation from CD-ROM
Known limitations in version 2.0
--------------------------------
* Compressed Lab TIFF images are not supported by version 2.0 of the Helios
XTension. If you have to work with such images (or with non-TIFF images as
e.g. EPS, PhotoShop, etc.) you might want to consider Helios EtherShare OPI
2.0 which does support them.
* The XTension automatically applies proper paperwhite to the printed area
during proof prints. You can also apply paperwhite manually to your documents
for better matching on screen. Remove manually applied paperwhite for proof
printing otherwise it will be matched twice and produce wrong results.
* The XTension cannot match images which are floating with text.
* The XTension cannot match CMYK images on screen. However, final output and
proof prints of CMYK TIFF images will be matched properly.
Overview of Helios Pre-Press Solutions, June 1997
=================================================
HELIOS Software GmbH, Hannover, http://www.helios.de, is a leading
supplier of files server, print spooler, AppleTalk router, OPI, and
color management solutions for the pre-press and printing industry.
Helios products are available worldwide through distribution and OEM
partners.
Helios EtherShare
-----------------
Helios EtherShare provides high-performance AppleTalk file and print
services on Unix/RISC-based machines and gives Unix applications
powerful, flexible printing options on PostScript devices. EtherShare
also includes a fast AppleTalk router, a PostScript font server, remote
administration from Macintosh, a Macintosh frontend to Unix mail, and
various other services for Apple Macintosh.
With the addition of Asanté NetDoubler, EtherShare becomes one of the fastest
servers for prepress and publishing. EtherShare NetDoubler allows a single
user to read and write files at speeds of up to six megabytes per second over
Fast Ethernet. With six clients in two Fast Ethernet segments, a server can
provide up to 17 megabytes per second.
Helios EtherShare OPI
---------------------
Helios EtherShare OPI is an open prepress interface server. It supports
Apple Macintosh clients as well as DOS/Windwos PCs and Unix
workstations and offers significant throughput improvements to prepress
users working with large color or greyscale images. Helios EtherShare
OPI 2.0 defines the next generation of OPI:
* Many additional image file formats are supported, especially
PhotoShop native files and hi-res images in not only CMYK, but also RGB
and CIE Lab color spaces.
* Color management is built into the OPI server by default and allows
to separate or color match images on-the-fly for proof printing and
final output.
* Images in the OPI output can either be separated for printing or
provided in CIE Lab or RGB for best quality electronic distribution,
e.g. on CD-ROM or over the Internet.
* The "Helios OpenImage" extension architecture allows other parties -
Helios OEM partners, software vendors, system houses, as well as
customers with in-house programming - to add new functionality for
image handling from file system, file format, resolution adaption to
screening.
Helios PCShare
--------------
Helios PCShare makes Unix/RISC-based machines to servers for
DOS/Windows PCs, too. It offers smooth integration of Macintosh, PCs
and Unix workstations in a prepress/printing workflow, incl. OPI.
Helios ColorSync 2 XTension
---------------------------
The Helios ColorSync 2 XTension allows Macintosh users of QuarkXPress 3 to
fully exploit the color management capabilities of Apple ColorSync 2. It
offers predictable and exact color matching throughout the entire prepress
process, including screen representations, proof prints, and final output.
The Helios ColorSync 2 XTension not only matches colors correctly for TIFF
images, but also for colorized QuarkXPress elements like boxes, borders, and
text.
Client/Server Color Management Solutions
----------------------------------------
The Helios ColorSync XTension for QuarkXPress is a great solution for
stand-alone Macintosh. But it also intergrates well with EtherShare OPI
2.0 and its built-in color management. With EtherShare OPI, color
adaption and transformation of images can be done where it should be
done: In the spool system when the color characterstics of the output
device is known, not during image scanning or retouching.
Because Helios co-developed the color matching method (CMM) for
EtherShare OPI with Linotype-Hell, the original provider for Apple's
ColorSync 2 CMM, there is full compatibility. Color results are exactly
the same whether the matching is done on a local Macintosh or on a
powerful Unix/RISC-based server by means of EtherShare OPI.
Helios and its distributors also offer Linotype-Hell's ScanOpen,
ViewOpen and PrintOpen products. With these tools customers can
generate individual ICC profiles for all devices used in the production
workflow: scanner, monitor, proof printer, and presses.
Helios Server Platforms
-----------------------
Powerful and scalable Unix/RISC-based machines from various vendors can
be used as Helios server platform: Apple Network Server, Data General
AiiON and Intel AViiON, Digital Alpha Unix, Hewlett-Packard PA-RISC
HP-UX, IBM RS/6000 AIX, Silicon Graphics Irix, Sun SPARC Solaris 1 & 2,
and others.
